Riya Pariyar: From a 12th-Grader Searching “How to Earn Money Online” to Building a Thriving Freelancing Career

When COVID hit, most students were figuring out how to survive online classes. But for Riya Pariyar, a teenager from the hills of Arunachal Pradesh, it sparked something bigger, a mission to become financially independent doing what she loved most: writing. The Beginning: A Simple Wish That Changed Everything Riya didn’t start freelancing to build a business. She just wanted to buy novels without feeling guilty for asking her parents. “Middle-class households often prioritize survival over passions, I wanted to change that for myself,” she says. Armed with curiosity and zero experience, she searched on YouTube, “How to earn money online?” and stumbled upon freelancing. Her first step? Writing on Medium. The blogs were “terrible,” as she laughs now, but they got her started. Soon she discovered LinkedIn, applied for internships, and landed her first, earning ₹7,000 a month at just 18. That experience opened the door to something she didn’t even know existed: ghostwriting. “I realized if I could write for others, I could write for myself too.” And that’s how her personal brand on LinkedIn began — one post, one story, one connection at a time. The Challenges: Power Cuts, Panic, and Perseverance Freelancing from a small town came with its own hurdles. Frequent power cuts, unstable Wi-Fi, and limited opportunities often tested her patience. But Riya didn’t quit. She journaled daily to process her emotions, got organized, and eventually learned to delegate and set boundaries. Limiting her clients to just two long-term retainers gave her both income stability and peace of mind. “Financial independence matters, but your health and peace of mind matter more.” The Milestone Moment: From Freelancer to Guest Speaker Fast forward to January 21, 2025, Riya stood on stage at Christ University, Bangalore, addressing 300+ students across disciplines. She spoke about LinkedIn growth, personal branding, and creating career opportunities online. “Standing there, I realized how far I’d come from that girl who once searched how to earn money online. It was a full-circle moment.” Riya’s Advice for Aspiring Freelancers Her message is clear, practical, and deeply personal: 💬 Her Words for Qwego “Freelancing gave me freedom, not just financial, but creative. It taught me that consistency beats talent every single time.” Riya believes that platforms like Qwego are not just communities, but catalysts for change. “What I love about Qwego is how it gives freelancers a space to be seen and celebrated, not just for big milestones, but for the courage to start. Platforms like these make stories like mine possible. They remind us that every small win matters, and that behind every freelancer is a journey worth sharing.” She adds that recognition and storytelling are what keep the freelancing spirit alive: “When you see others building, learning, and growing beside you, it pushes you to keep going. Qwego is doing exactly that, creating a ripple of motivation for freelancers everywhere.” This was Riya’s journey, from a small-town student with a dream to a confident LinkedIn Branding Strategist and speaker inspiring hundreds. 💭 What part of her story inspired you the most? We’d love to hear your thoughts below. 𝗜𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻, the world retreated indoors, banana bread became a trend, and formal shirts met pajama bottoms on video calls. While others turned to home workouts or kitchen experiments, 𝗔𝗻𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗮 𝗪 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘀, 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁. Somewhere between helping a neighbour’s child understand metaphors and reworking song lyrics into storytelling structures, she recognised something familiar: the ease with which she explained, engaged, and connected. Teaching and storytelling came naturally, and freelancing became the vehicle through which she could offer that to the world. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘄 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. She picked up small projects, built relationships, and began working with individuals across a wide range of roles and backgrounds. Her work reached teenagers, professionals in leadership, blue-collar workers, and CEOs; her reach extended nationally and internationally. She helped people communicate clearly, lead with presence, and rediscover confidence. As the work grew, so did the demands. Her calendar filled quickly; days blurred into a mix of voice coaching, art sessions, and lesson plans. Time management, once a minor detail, became a central challenge. She adjusted by structuring her schedule with precision: teaching slots, studio hours, and deliberate breaks. Balancing creativity and instruction required more than intention; it demanded rhythm and discipline. The result was sustainable, if sometimes still chaotic. 𝗛𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗲𝘁. A student credits her during an HR call. Another writes a song as thanks. Someone lands a job and sends a message to say they remembered what she had taught. These gestures, while small in form, hold immense weight. They confirm what she already suspected: she is not just teaching technique, but reshaping belief and self-worth. Her advice is simple, yet anchored in lived experience: begin now, with whatever is in front of you. Wait too long and the idea fades; move forward and clarity will follow. The timing may never be perfect, but progress rarely waits. This was Anusha’s journey: a freelancing hero whose strength lies not just in what she teaches, but in how deeply she lives it. Stay tuned for more stories from those who carve their path with purpose and quiet persistence.

Mayank Sharma: Qwego Freelancing Heroes

Mayank Sharma: Coding with Purpose, Growing with Patience

Mayank found his way into freelancing after completing an internship. Through the support of senior professionals who introduced him to direct clients, he discovered the appeal of autonomy and variety. That early exposure gave him not only practical experience but also a clear direction: to build a career that blended independence with continuous growth. As a full-stack developer working with .NET and Angular, Mayank has faced a persistent challenge: keeping pace with rapid technological change. Frameworks evolve quickly, and knowledge becomes outdated unless it is refreshed regularly. Older project architectures struggle to accommodate newer libraries. Major updates demand time to refactor code and adjust workflows. For Mayank, these difficulties became part of the craft rather than obstacles to it. He addressed them through deliberate learning, frequent experimentation, structured code reviews, and clear planning. This approach, he explains, helped him stay aligned with emerging trends while maintaining the integrity of legacy systems. One project stands out in particular. At his previous company, he led the technical development of PowerHub, an electrical component management system. It required real-time data accuracy and communication between field engineers and a central dashboard. Mayank designed and implemented a SignalR hub to handle the live updates. The result: consistent performance, accurate tracking, and seamless integration across systems. This achievement, he notes, marked a significant step in his career and validated his approach to problem-solving. Through these experiences, Mayank has cultivated a steady, focused mindset. His journey reflects a quiet discipline that values learning, trust in the process, and thoughtful execution over noise or haste. His advice for new freelancers: be patient and consistent in what you do; results may take time, but persistence builds lasting momentum. This was Mayank’s journey: a freelancing hero who writes not only code but also a story of resilience and quiet resolve. Stay tuned for more stories from freelancers who are shaping the future through their everyday effort. #Qwego #FreelancingHeroes

Her journey brought together multiple disciplines: health niche content writing, marketing design, yoga therapy, and nutritional guidance.
